Setback for Barcelona & Argentina
Barcelona finished their season on a high not eon Saturday as they beat Alaves 3-1 in the Copa del Rey final.
Leo Messi opened the scoring for the Catalans, before Neymar and Paco Alacer scored two late goals at the end of the first half to kill off Alaves.
But the match wasn’t great for every Barcelona player.
Argentine defender Javier Mascherano was subbed out the game in the first half with a huge gash in his head after a nasty head collision.
On Sunday news of Mascherano’s injury has been made public, and it’s bad news for Argentina.
Out for a while
Not only did Mascherano suffered a head injury, he also suffered a bad injury to his knee. As reported on Barcelona’s official website:
The tests carried out on the Argentine international have revealed that he has a posterior capsule strain in his right knee. The player will be out for six weeks.
Apart from the obvious disappointment Mascherano must be feeling, his injury is terrible news for incoming Argentina boss Jorge Sampaoli.
Argentina have international friendlies lined up against Brazil and Singapore in June which Mascherano will now miss.
As for Argentina’s hopes of qualifying for the next World Cup, La Albiceleste are fifth in qualifying right, while they face a monster match away in Uruguay in August.
